Iran’s Foreign Minister Arrives in New York for UN General Assembly

Araghchi Leads Iran’s Diplomatic Delegation to UN General Assembly

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in New York on Monday, September 21, 2026, to represent Iran at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). His visit comes at a particularly sensitive moment in relations between Iran, the United States and Israel, with the conflict in the Middle East continuing to shape international diplomacy.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry confirmed Araghchi’s arrival and said he is leading the country’s diplomatic delegation during the annual UN gathering. The ministry said his programme includes participation in General Assembly activities as well as meetings and consultations with foreign ministers and senior officials from several countries. www.apnews.com

Araghchi’s arrival comes as world leaders and senior government representatives gather in New York for the UN’s high-level week. The United Nations says the general debate for the 81st session is taking place from September 22 to 28, with heads of state, heads of government and other senior representatives presenting their countries’ positions on major international issues.

A significant diplomatic visit

The visit is significant because it represents Araghchi’s first trip to the United States since the conflict involving Iran escalated earlier this year. The United States had approved visas for senior Iranian officials, including Araghchi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, allowing them to attend the UN meetings despite the continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Araghchi arrived in New York ahead of President Pezeshkian, who was expected to travel to the United States on Tuesday to attend the General Assembly. This makes the foreign minister one of the first senior Iranian officials to travel to the United States for the UN gathering since the latest escalation.

The Iranian delegation’s presence also comes amid restrictions placed on some members of the delegation. Reports said the United States approved visas for senior Iranian leaders while imposing restrictions on their travel and activities during the visit. www.mfa.gov.ir

Meetings with foreign officials expected

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Araghchi is expected to hold discussions with foreign ministers and senior officials from various countries during his stay in New York. The meetings could provide an opportunity for Iran to present its position directly to other governments during one of the busiest diplomatic weeks of the year.

The UN General Assembly brings together representatives from all 193 UN member states. Unlike the Security Council, where five permanent members hold veto power, every member state has one vote in the General Assembly. Its agenda covers a broad range of international issues, including peace and security, development and international cooperation.

For Iran, the gathering provides an international platform at a time when its relations with Western countries remain strained. Araghchi’s meetings are therefore expected to focus heavily on regional developments and Iran’s diplomatic position.

Tensions remain at the centre of discussions

Araghchi’s arrival comes against the background of continuing tensions between Iran and major powers. Recent reports have described the UN General Assembly as an important diplomatic setting for discussions about the conflict and the possibility of reducing tensions.

The Iranian foreign minister has also spoken publicly about Iran’s concerns regarding international institutions. After arriving in New York, Araghchi discussed Iran’s position on international affairs and the role of the United Nations. www.aljazeera.com

Meanwhile, the United Nations has placed peace, international cooperation and other global challenges at the centre of this year’s high-level meetings. The theme of the 81st session is “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”  Foreign Ministry – Araghchi arrives in New York

As the week continues, attention will remain on speeches, diplomatic meetings and possible discussions involving Iran and other major powers. President Pezeshkian’s expected participation will add another high-level Iranian voice to the proceedings.

For now, Araghchi’s arrival marks the beginning of Iran’s diplomatic activities at the 81st UN General Assembly, with his meetings likely to attract attention because of the wider regional tensions and the difficult relationship between Tehran and Washington.
